Paris Neighborhood Discovery
How
do you decide where to stay in Paris? If youre a first time
visitor, you probably want to be centrally located, close to the
metro, in a neighborhood that has charm, restaurants, cafés,
and postcard views. If youve already been to Paris, maybe
youd like to explore a different neighborhood, or maybe
you loved the first place you stayed and want to return.
The good news is that Paris is made up of many neighborhoods,
ancient villages, places and quartiers, and each one has its own
charm and character. You will certainly want to visit the great
monuments and museums of the city, and absorbsomething of her
long and fascinating history. But Paris, ancient as she is, is
also a modern city where people live, shop, work and play, and
you will be part of that as well.
Depending on the neighborhood you choose, youll discover
a different face of Paris. And whether you love art, fashion,
food, nightlife, trendy or traditional, youll be able to
find your Paris in one of her many quartiers.
We hope youll find this a way to begin to know Paris and the
people who live there, and to truly experience your Paris.
Choose from the following neighborhoods:
Louvre Madeleine - Right Bank
If your mental picture of Paris includes the Ritz and designer
couture, the gourmet delights of Fauchon and the elegant symmetry
of the Place Vendome, then this might be your neighborhood. With
one of the worlds greatest museums, the Comédie Francaise
(and the Opera nearby), and the Madeleine, this neighborhood is
rich in history and elegance, and never out of style.
Marais - Right Bank
In the 17th century, the time of Louis the XIV, the Marais, centering
around the elegant Place des Vosges, was THE place to live in
Paris. Mme de Sévigné, whose letters to her daughter
described life at court, lived here (her house is now the Musée
Carnavalet, which traces the history of the city of Paris.) After
a long period of neglect, the neighborhood was revitalized and
is now a fascinating mixture of elements, from the old Jewish
neighborhood to the Picasso museum to the charming boutiques and
galleries along its main streets.
Champs-Elysées
- Right Bank
The Champs-Elysées stretches from the Place de la Concorde
to the Arc to Triomphe, from museums and embassies to upscale
shopping and restaurants. Explore the side streets and youll
find some of the most elegant shopping in town and some of the
best restaurants, as well as street markets, neighborhood shops
and everything that Paris has to offer.
Quartier Latin - Left Bank
The Latin Quarter was and still is the center of student life
in Paris home to the Sorbonne, the University of Paris, and
the thousands of studentswho come there from around the world. Though
the student population was dispersed tovarious new campuses around
the city after 1968, the mood still lingers and the neighborhood
is full of life, day and night, with the young and young at heart.
Close to Notre Dame and bordering the Seine, full of bookshops and
with an international flavor, the Quartier Latin remains a vibrant
and colorful place.
Saint-Germain-des-Prés - Left Bank
Known through the 20th century as the literary hub of Paris, haunt
of existentialists and bohemians, Saint Germain is home to famous
cafés, museums, bookstores and a lively street life. Recent
years have added upscale boutiques and galleries to the mix, but
the literary and bohemian flavor still lingers.
