Dordogne - 'Most Beautiful Villages'
Self-drive
Directly east of Perigord, the rocky limestone causses of the
Quercy plateau are the setting for many of the plus beaux
villages" - "most beautiful villages in France.
Chief among these is Rocamadour, the gravity defying medieval
village and place of pilgrammage since the middle ages. The local
song describes the village
The houses on the stream,
The churches on the houses,
The rocks on the churches,
The castle on the rocks.
Other villages on the most beautiful list include
Collonges-la-Rouge with its red stone houses, Carennac with its
fine Renaissance houses, and Turenne, built on a spiral pattern.
There are many others, including La Roque-Gageac, its narrow front
clinging to the cliffside overlooking the river, and Domme, a
classic bastide town.
