From the end of November until the first of January, Alsace delights
in Christmas.
The Christmas markets in Strasbourg stay open for a month, scenting
the air with vin chaud and cinnamon. On weekends, the villages
take turns staging their own Christmas markets - each one different.
What better way to get in a holiday mood than to join in some
of the oldest holiday festivities in France ?
Strasbourg’s Christmas Market is the oldest in Europe, dating
back to 1570. The main market stretching around the ancient cathedral
in the center of town stretches down a side street lit by crystal
chandeliers and on across town.
Christmas decorations, gingerbread, cookies and local specialties,
trees and lights, music and vin chaud, are all part of the scene.
Famous for its wine and gastronomy as well as its picturesque
villages, Alsace is a delight at any time of year, but with the
towns decked out for Christmas, it’s even better.
Besides Strasbourg, we’ll visit Colmar and at least one
of the small village Christmas markets for a taste of old-time
village celebration. And of course we’ll sample the winstub
fare, the local wines and see the apostles make their way around
the famous astronomical clock in the cathedral.
Then we’ll hop on the TGV to Paris, where the City of Light
will be doubly lit for the holidays for a little extra browsing,
shopping and exploring, and you will head home in plenty of time
to enjoy Christmas with your family.
