Normandy
Named
for the Northmen Viking conquerors of long ago, Normandy
includes a large portion of northeastern France. It is an area
rich in history, from its most famous sight, le Mont Saint Michel,
to the landing beaches of World War II. Abbeys and chateaux dot
the countryside, an architectural heritage which also illustrates
the historic and artistic wealth of the region. The Bayeux tapestry
and le Mont Saint Michel are only two of the treasures to be found
in Normandy.
Inland Normandy is green and rural, with villages of half-timbered
houses, orchards and fertile farmland. The coast includes the
chalk cliffs of the Alabaster Coast, the famous beach resorts
of Deauville and Trouville, and the historic landing beaches of
1944. Farther east, the Cotentin peninsula, jutting into the sea,
has its own savage beauty.
