Burgundy

page pix A former powerful and prestigious dukedom, a land of history, Burgundy has always been a link between north and south, at the crossroads of Europe. Medieval Beaune is now the center for wine-making, and the Côte d’Or is known for its vintages the world around. But the history of Burgundy is ancient, stretching back to Roman Gaul. The Ducal Palace in Dijon was once home to one of the most powerful princes in Europe. The power of the Church also resided in medieval Burgundy, at Vézélay, Fontenay, and most of all, at Cluny.

You can concentrate on the vineyards, stretching from Chablis in the north to Macon in the south, encompassing the wine villages, ancient hillsides planted by the Romans, and a host of famous names.

You can also explore the ancient abbays and medieval towns, Autun and Auxerre, the great pilgrimmage site of Vézélay and the wilds of the Morvan. Wherever you venture in Burgundy, you'll touch the depth of its history and the flavor of its terroir, that word that the French use to describe the essence of place.
