Brittany
Brittany
reaches out into the sea, into the Atlantic - nearly 750 miles
of coastline of a rocky picturesque peninsula, home to tall tale
telling Celts and misty origins in Arthurian legend. Brittany
is the farthest eastward reach of France, often separate in custom
and history.
A sea-faring land, home to an independent people - parts of
Brittany still maintain old customs. St. Malo, home to corsairs
(pirates, wed say) and Pont-Aven - home to artists are only
two of the special places to be found here.
Brittany is only very lately part of France - conquered by the
Romans, it was Celtic immigrants who settled here - bringing with
them the Arthurian lore and legend, the Celtic character, and
a separate language - Breton - related not to French but to Welsh,
Gaelic and other Celtic tongues. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance,
religious architecture flourished in Brittany, producing many
cathedrals, abbeys and unique to the area - the parish closes.
Great fortress castles also appeared and still dot the landscape.
