Alsace

page pixStretching along the Rhine on the oft-disputed border with Germany, Alsace is home to romanesque churches, picturesque villages, hearty and distinctive cuisine and some fine white wines. The single towering steeple of Strasbourg cathedral can be seen for miles; the old part of the city is a charming concentration of half-timbered houses, canals and intimate shops and restaurants. Other towns of note are Colmar, often called Alsace in miniature, and Mulhouse, just a short distance from Switzerland.

The countryside abounds with fruit trees, vineyards and flowers; a large number of the ‘plus beaux villages’ – ‘most beautiful villages’ in France are concentrated in Alsace. On the western edge, the Vosges mountains rise above the plain of Alsace and provide opportunities for sports and perched remains of castles.

The characteristic ‘winstub’, a wine/bar restaurant, makes a great place to sample the local specialties in the larger towns, and tasting opportunities are everywhere. And starting at the end of November, the Christmas markets enliven the villages and towns with crafts, lights, foodstuffs and decorations. Strasbourg is home to the oldest Christmas market in Europe (yes – older than Germany’s) and the festivities continue throughout the Christmas season

Alsace makes a great destination on its own for lovers of great food and wine, picturesque villages and dictinctive cities. Combine it with a trip to Burgundy for a food and wine lover’s paradise.
